Arismendy Mendy, along with Martin de la Cruz was hosting Variedades Latinas every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-2pm when I became the General Manager of WHCR 21 years ago. On those mornings, Arismendy would start the show with “Wepa” and laughter, then the phones would start ringing off the hook.
Variedades Latinas was the kind of show that you needed to start your day. The focus wasn’t on the troubles of the world, but hope and joy; the tools you needed to get your day off to a good start. Although I often didn’t understand the nuances of what they were saying, because I can understand Spanish when you speak it slowly to me, not rápidamente, I could still feel the energy and rhythm of the show.
I know that Arismendy had charisma and the gift of gab and he could have been a well-paid radio host at any commercial radio station in New York City. Yet he chose to volunteer at WHCR to give the Washington Heights community a show that they could actually call into to voice their joy and express their issues. He provided a true service to the Washington Heights community, by giving listeners a vehicle to communicate with each other, which is why City College was given a license to broadcast at 90.3FM; to serve the community in a way that no other station could.
Arismendy Garcia was a leader and yet, one of the kindest people I have ever met. As popular as he was with his listeners, he could have had a big ego, yet he remained humble and was always kind and respectful.
He was one of the greatest fundraisers we have ever had at WHCR. And because of that he was able to talk me into closing out the Latin music fundraisers by thanking the listeners in Spanish. As I said before my Spanish is not that great and once, I believe I accidently thanked those who donated money to the station for “eating my cake,” which became a running joke.
Tina, our Production Manager was always going in to the studio and joking with Arismendy and Martin and they were teaching her Spanish off the air; but somehow should would come back into the office and all she knew was some curse words.
A few years ago, Arismendy broke my heart when he left WHCR. His reason for leaving didn’t make any sense to me, but now I understand that he was battling an ailment that he wanted to keep private.
I can barely type these words because tears are blurring my vision. I do not question life and death because there are many unanswered questions as to why some are on earth until their 80s and 90s and a kind soul like Arismendy left us at the tender age of 58. I want to thank Martin de la Cruz for being a friend to him until the end.
The only thing that comforts me is my belief that Arismendy’s soul is in a better place, and he is no longer in a body that is suffering. His spirit of laughter and joy will always be with us here at WHCR. I hope that his family will one day find comfort in the memories of joy he must have brought to their lives.

WHCR lamenta la pérdida de Arismendy García, conductor y productor de Variedades Latinas durante más de 30 años.
Arismendy Mendy, junto con Martín de la Cruz, presentaba Variedades Latinas todos los lunes, miércoles y viernes de 10 am a 2 pm cuando me convertí en Gerente General de WHCR hace 21 años. Esas mañanas, Arismendy iniciaba el programa con “Wepa” y risas y carcajadas, luego los teléfonos empezaban a sonar sin parar.
Variedades Latinas era el tipo de programa radial que necesitas para comenzar el día. La atención no se enfocaba en los problemas del mundo, sino en la esperanza y la alegría; las herramientas para empezar tu día. Aunque muchas veces no entendía los matices de lo que decían, porque puedo entender el español solo cuando me lo hablas despacio, no rápidamente, todavía podía sentir la energía y el ritmo del espectáculo.
Sé que Arismendy tenía carisma y el don de la palabra y podría haber sido un locutor de radio bien pagado en cualquier estación de radio comercial de la ciudad de Nueva York. Sin embargo, eligió ser voluntario en WHCR para brindarle a la comunidad de Washington Heights un espectáculo al que pudieran llamar para expresar su alegría y comentar sus problemas. Brindó un verdadero servicio a la comunidad de Washington Heights y el Bronx, de ofrecerles a los oyentes un vehículo para comunicarse entre sí, razón por la cual City College recibió una licencia para transmitir en 90.3FM; servir a la comunidad de una manera que ninguna otra estación podría hacerlo.
Arismendy García fue un líder y, sin embargo, y una de las personas más amables que he conocido. A pesar de lo popular que era entre sus oyentes, podría haber tenido un gran ego, pero se mantuvo humilde y siempre fue amable y respetuoso.
Fue uno de los mayores recaudadores de fondos que jamás hayamos tenido en WHCR. Y gracias a eso pudo convencerme de hacer un breve discurso todos los años al terminar recaudación de fondos de música latina agradeciendo a los oyentes en español. Como dije antes, mi español no es tan bueno y una vez creo que cordialmente agradecí a quienes donaron dinero a la estación por “comerse mi pastel”, lo que se convirtió en una broma constante.
Tina, nuestra Gerente de Producción, siempre entraba al estudio y bromeaba con Arismendy y Martin y ellos le enseñaban español fuera del aire; pero de alguna manera debería volver a la oficina y todo lo que sabía eran algunas malas palabras.
Hace unos años, Arismendy me rompió el corazón cuando dejó WHCR. Su motivo para irse no tenía ningún sentido para mí, pero ahora entiendo que estaba luchando contra una dolencia que quería mantener en privado.
Apenas puedo escribir estas palabras porque las lágrimas nublan mi visión. No cuestiono la vida y la muerte porque hay muchas preguntas sin respuesta de por qué algunos están en la tierra hasta los 80 y 90 años y un alma bondadosa como Arismendy nos dejó a la tierna edad de 58 años. Quiero agradecer a Martín de la Cruz por ser un amigo para él hasta el final.
Lo único que me consuela es mi creencia de que el alma de Arismendy está en un lugar mejor y ya no está en un cuerpo que sufre. Su espíritu de risa y alegría siempre estará con nosotros aquí en WHCR. Espero que su familia algún día encuentre consuelo en los recuerdos de alegría que él debe haber traído a sus vidas.
